Acoustical monitoring of fish density, behavior, and growth rate in a tank ArchiMer
Conti, Stéphane; Roux, Philippe; Fauvel, Christian; Maurer, Benjamin; Demer, David.
A challenge for the aquaculture community has long been the development of harmless techniques for monitoring fish in a tank. Acoustic telemetry has been used to monitor fish swimming behavior, and passive acoustics have been used to monitor fish feeding, but new techniques are needed to monitor non-invasively their numbers and growth rates. Recently, it has been demonstrated that the acoustical total scattering cross section of fish swimming in a tank can be measured from multiple reverberation time series. These measurements have been used successfully to estimate the number of fish in a tank in laboratory conditions, and to characterize their acoustical signatures. Here, we introduce a novel method for acoustically monitoring fish numerical density and...

Age and growth of Zapteryx brevirostris (Elasmobranchii: Rhinobatidae) in southern Brazil Neotropical Ichthyology
Carmo,Wanessa P. D.; Fávaro,Luís Fernando; Coelho,Rui.
ABSTRACT Age and growth studies are fundamental to successful fisheries management. Zapteryx brevirostris (Müller & Henle, 1841) is distributed off the Brazilian continental shelf and this species is assessed as “Vulnerable” in the Red List of the International Union for the Conservation of Nature (IUCN). Thus, the objective of this study was to present previously unknown information about the age and growth of Z. brevirostris that can be used for its management, conservation, and fisheries. A total of 162 specimens were sampled, with total lengths (TL) varying between 35.7 cm and 56 cm. The vertebrae were embedded in resin, sectioned in cuts with 0.5 mm thickness and the growth bands of the vertebrae were read under a light microscope. In the studied...

Annual skeletal extension of two reef-building corals from the Colombian Caribbean Sea OceanDocs
Charry, H.; Alvarado, E.M.; Sánchez, J.A..
The skeletal growth of the scleractinian corals Diploria labyrinthiformis (Linnaeus 1758) and Montastraea annularis (Ellis and Solander 1786) from Isla Grande (north of Rosario islands), Colombian Caribbean, was determined from annual extension increments revealed by X-radiography of 4-6 mm thick slabs obtained along the axis of maximum growth. The skeletal extension average rate for the last 22 years for D. labyrinthiformis was 3.8 mm year-1 (SE 0.10; N = 87). The correlation between growth of D. labyrinthiformi s and hours of sunlight was significantly negative. The annual variances of sunlight enhanced annual statistically significant differences of growth in this species. M. annularis showed an average extension growth of 10.6 mm year-1 (SE 0.32; N =...

De Donato,Marcos; Ramirez,Raúl; Howell,Chris; Verginelli,Roberto; Orta,Tomás; Cabrera,Saúl; Mata,Enrique; Manrique,Ramón.
We investigated the effects of family selection on the growth rates of four genetic lines of Litopenaeus vannamei, the Pacific white shrimp, from Venezuela. The mean family weight at selection was 16.79 g and the mean growth rate was 0.169 g d-1 at a mean age of 138 days. The mean growth rates per generation were 0.141 g d-1 for the parental generation (P0), 0.173 g d-1 for the F1 and 0.191 g d-1 for the F2. Survival varied from 83.3% to 94.4%. There were statistically significant differences between lines, with lines B and C, growing at higher temperatures and lower salinities, showing the fastest growth. Regression analysis between growth rate and age for each genetic line showed high r² values, but smaller than those shown between growth rate and...

Bathymetric distribution and growth rates of Eunicella verrucosa (Cnidaria: Gorgoniidae) populations along the Marseilles coast (France) ArchiMer
Sartoretto, Stephane; Francour, Patrice.
Gorgonians are important organisms in the Mediterranean Sea, where they form rocky benthic communities. Four main species (3 Holaxonia and 1 Scleraxonia) are predominant in infra- and circalittoral communities of the northwestern Mediterranean basin. Other species, such as Eunicella verrucosa (Pallas, 1766), are more rarely encountered. The expansion to unusually shallow bathymetric levels has been noted in the region of Marseilles (France) (between 20 and 40 m depth). A ten-year monitoring of colonies was used to assess the growth rate according to age (size): from 3.33 cm year(-1) (height <15 cm) to 0.62 cm year(-1) (height >40 cm).

Changes in growth variables and potassium content in leaves of Black Barley in response to NaCl Braz. J. Plant Physiol.
Abu-Al-Basal,Mariam A.; Yasseen,Bassam T..
Much attention is being focused on the Black barley (Hordeum distichum L.) as a local cultivar offering good model for a cereal crop has traits of resistance to drought and salinity during vegetative growth stages. Although Black was sensitive to salt stress during germination, it developed gradual tolerance with age and proved very tolerant during growth and development stages. The data of study clearly revealed how this cultivar was superior over Arivat (Hordeum vulgare L.) in many physiological aspects such as leaf growth variables (i.e. rate and duration) and processes (i.e. cell division), tiller production and potassium content. Black barley had more tillers, faster rate and longer duration of growth processes which was accompanied with potassium...

Comparing diatom and Alexandrium catenella/tamarense blooms in Thau lagoon: Importance of dissolved organic nitrogen in seasonally N-limited systems ArchiMer
Collos, Yves; Jauzein, Cecile; Ratmaya, Widya; Souchu, Philippe; Abadie, Eric; Vaquer, André.
Diatom blooms in Thau lagoon are always related to rain events leading to inputs of inorganic nutrients such as phosphate, ammonium and nitrate through the watershed with time lags of about 1 week. In contrast, blooms of Alexandrium catenella/tamarense can occur following periods of 3 weeks without precipitation and no significant input of conventional nutrients such as nitrate and phosphate. Field results also indicate a significant drop (from 22–25 to 15–16 μM over 3 days) in dissolved organic nitrogen (DON) at the bloom peak, as well as a significant inverse relationship between A. catenella/tamarense cell density and DON concentrations that is not apparent for diatom blooms. Such dinoflagellate blooms are also associated with elevated (6–9 μM) ammonium...

Hake (Merluccius merluccius) is widely distributed in the Atlantic Ocean and the Mediterranean Sea. It is one of the most exploited demersal fish. In Tunisia, hake is captured from the north to the south (KHOUFI et al., 2010). Hake is an important species of economic interest and thus the subject of a large literature, but its biology remains insufficiently known, particularly on terms of age and growth estimations, which are essential for stock assessment and management. Otolith microstructure provides a useful tool for age determination of juvenile hake, based on daily increment deposition (ARNERI & MORALES-NIN, 2000; MORALES-NIN et al., 2005; KACHER & AMARA, 2005; BELCARI et al., 2006). Consequently, we studied growth and estimated age, using...

Decoupling light harvesting, electron transport and carbon fixation during prolonged darkness supports rapid recovery upon re-illumination in the Arctic diatom Chaetoceros neogracilis ArchiMer
Lacour, Thomas; Morin, Philippe-israël; Sciandra, Théo; Donaher, Natalie; Campbell, Douglas A.; Ferland, Joannie; Babin, Marcel.
During winter in the Arctic marine ecosystem, diatoms have to survive long periods of darkness caused by low sun elevations and the presence of sea ice covered by snow. To better understand how diatoms survive in the dark, we subjected cultures of the Arctic diatom Chaetoceros neogracilis to a prolonged period of darkness (1 month) and to light resupply. Chaetoceros neogracilis was not able to grow in the dark but cell biovolume remained constant after 1 month in darkness. Rapid resumption of photosynthesis and growth recovery was also found when the cells were transferred back to light at four different light levels ranging from 5 to 154 µmol photon m−2 s−1. This demonstrates the remarkable ability of this species to re-initiate growth over a wide range...

Determination of larval instars in Chironomus sancticaroli (Diptera: Chironomidae) using novel head capsule structures Rev. Bras. Zool.
Richardi,Vinicius S.; Rebechi,Débora; Aranha,José M. R.; Navarro-Silva,Mário A..
Determining the age composition of a population is important when conducting ecological, taxonomic and environmental assessments. Morphometric measurements of the head capsule, especially the length and width, are widely used in the identification of insect instars, but alternative ways for determining the age of insects can expand the options for the analysis of field and laboratory populations. This study evaluated the morphometry of the antennae, mandibles, mentum and ventromental plates to discriminate among the four larval instars of Chironomus sancticaroli Strixino & Strixino, 1981. The larvae were reared in the laboratory under constant temperature (25°C) and photoperiod of 12/12 hours for 19 days, with a supply of food. Fifteen larvae were...
